BAMENDA 1 COUNCIL DEATH CERTIFICATION

To prove that there is no more life for a person, a death certificate must be obtained

A family head, a relative of the deceased or any other person present at time of death can apply for a death certificate. In case where death occurs in a medical institution, the head of the institution must make a declaration. Before submitting application, an applicant must ensure that he or she has all the necessary documents and always report death early enough to avoid wastage of time in processes on investigations

Instructions to follow in declaring death


  • Death occurrence, burial, or residence of the deceased person must be within Bamenda 1 Council Area
  • Death must be declared within a period of ninety (90) days.
  • In cases where body of deceased person cannot be found or cannot be identified, an application must have a declaration of a competent judicial police officer and Police shall carry out investigation where need be

Required documents to declare death


  • A doctor’s certificate (in case death occurred in hospital);
  • A declaratory judgment (where death was proven in court)
  • Proof of death from local authorities;
  • Identity card or travel document of the deceased
  • Identity card or travel document of applicant

Information required for death certification


  • Name, profession and residence, relationship and home of the applicant;
  • Name, date and place of birth, sex, marital status, profession and residence of the deceased;
  • Date and place of death;
  • Cause of death;
  • Nationality;
  • Place of burial;
  • Names of both parents of the deceased;
  • Names, profession and residence of witnesses; and
  • The date the certificate was drawn up.


Importance of Death certification


  • Death certificates are used when a once married person wants to remarry;
  • Whether you are applying for insurance benefits, settlement of pension claims, or transfer of property; a death certificate will be required
  • it makes the legal proceedings that follow a death that much easier and thus less stressful
  • The death certificate gives the family a document listing the official cause of death and is helpful in accepting the loss
  • Registration process provides statistical data on deaths and causes of death; and
  • It helps in the process of in updating population data;
